How does it work?
In the State of Michigan it is illegal to sell or purchase raw milk. However, it is still legal to drink milk from your own cow. When you purchase a share in our dairy herd, you become an owner, and thus have the legal right to consume milk from your herd. We provide the service of milking and maintaining the herd for you.
Each share is based on the anticipated milk production of our herd, with one share corresponding to one gallon of milk per week. Each owner must purchase a share of the herd, a one-time refundable fee of $25. Each shareholder is then charged a monthly herd maintenance fee of $35. We also offer half shares for owners who want smaller quantities of milk. Both the share price and the maintenance fee are reduced proportionally with partial shares. Your share price is fully refundable should you choose to leave the program for any reason. Our prices are a bit higher than other herdshares in the area, but we are the only all-grass operation. The increased cost reflects the decreased production (40%) that comes with an all-grass diet.
Shareholders are responsible for providing their own clean containers each week, which we fill for pickup the following week. Half-gallon mason jars are available for purchase at the farm.
Milk is picked up weekly on the farm, or at designated dropoff locations in Three Rivers. If neither of these locations are convenient for you, please let us know; we may be able to arrange other locations as well.
