About the Herd
We currently maintain a herd of five milking cows, all jerseys and one brown-swiss. Each of these cows have been selected in part because they produce a quality, high-butterfat content milk.
Our herd subsists on a diet of pasture in the summer and hay in the winter. Their daily diet does not include grain or silage, both of which acidify digestive tracts and harm the cow's health as well as encouraging the dangerous O157:H7 strain of E. coli.
We do not use any growth or milk promoting hormones. We certainly don't want them in our milk, and neither do our shareholders.
We milk exclusively by hand, so there is no risk of sterilizing solution making its way into your milk (as can happen with machine-milking). Hand milking is easier on the cows, and reduces the chance of mastitis in our herd, and eliminates the risk of bacterial contamination from the plumbing that is used in machine milking systems.
